John Hooks
Mr. John Edward "Ed" Hooks, 85, died on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009,
at Gaston Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.
A native of Matthews, he was the son of the late John Osrowe and Bertie
Elizabeth Black Hooks. Mr. Hooks was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World
War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He retired from the AAA-Carolina
Motor Club, where he was an insurance agent. He was a member of Victory Baptist
Church in Lattimore, where he was also a member of the Senior Adult Sunday
school class. While family was in the forefront of his life, he loved his
collection of full-sized and die cast cars and feeding the deer around his home.
Mr. Hooks is survived by his son, SFC John R. Caldwell and his wife, Janet, of
Lakewood, Wash.; daughters, Lisa H. Cook and husband, Aaron, of Valdese and Dora
H. Groves and husband, Todd, of Gastonia; sister, Margaret Rowan and husband,
Jim, of Matthews; grandchildren, Tamera Grigg of Charlotte, Kaitlyn Cook of
Valdese, Janessa Caldwell of Lakewood, Wash., Hope Grigg of Gastonia, Matthew
Cook of Valdese, Jared Caldwell of Lakewood, Wash., and Nicholas Groves of
Gastonia; niece, Juanita Jordan of Matthews; and his cat, Peeper.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at
Belaire Healthcare Center in Gastonia and the 6th North Staff at Gaston Memorial
Hospital for the care that they gave Mr. Hooks.
Funeral: Wednesday, Aug. 19, 11 a.m., Victory Baptist Church, 3907 Towery Road,
Lattimore
Visitation: The family will receive friends one hour before the service, at the
church.
Graveside Service: Wednesday, 4 p.m., Matthews Historic Cemetery, Matthews, N.C.
