Evelyn Isabell Cotterell Clark

July 22, 1916 to July 19, 2009

Mrs. Evelyn Izabell Cotterell Clark , 92, of 212 Windsor Drive went home to

be with the Lord on Sunday, July 19, 2009 at Hospice Cleveland County.

Evelyn Isabell Cotterell Clark was born on July 22, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA 

to Isabel Mary Simons Cotterell and Ernest Cotterell.  Growing up in 

Merchantville, NJ in a large family of accomplished musicians, Evelyn loved 

to sing and earned the lead in her high school operetta. 

As a young woman she had a lovely voice, was a better than average swimmer, 

and had a sharp mind for business.  She and two sisters opened and operated 

an extremely successful beauty shop in Narberth, PA called the Sisters 

Salon.  She caught the eye of the boy next door, and four years later Evelyn 

married Charles Howard Clark on October 29, 1938.  They recently celebrated 

their 70th anniversary. 

Evelyn and Charles built a home in the farm lands of Moorestown, NJ where 

they raised their daughter, Merridith Isabelle Clark Martin.  The couple 

resided in that home for approximately 60 years.  After a short time in 

Southhampton, NJ they moved to Shelby, NC to be with family. 

Evelyn was a loving mother and friend with a kind and gentle spirit.  She 

was an astute business woman as well as an adept saleswoman.  In her later 

years, Evelyn enjoyed studying and investing in the stock market. She never 

met a child she didn’t love. 

Evelyn is survived by her devoted husband, Charles, and her daughter, 

Merridith, and son-in-law, Roger plus two granddaughters - Pamela McCray 

and husband Bruce McCray of Richmond Hill, GA and Christa Aldinger and 

husband Kyle of Shelby, NC. 

Evelyn is survived by five great grandchildren, Joshua Burnett, Riley 

McCray, Anthony, Anna and Alexis Aldinger.  She is greatly missed. 

A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009, in the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul A. Hirth.
