Mr.
Andrew Jackson "Jack" Champion Jr., 65, of 200 Bethlehem Road, died Tuesday,
June 16, 2009, at Hospice at Wendover, following a two year battle with cancer.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Andrew Jackson and
Margaret Eleanor Greene Champion. Mr. Champion graduated from Frank L. Ashley
High School of Gastonia in 1962. He attended Mars Hill College. He retired from
Winn-Dixie as a meat cutter in 1998 after 35 years of service. He was a member
of Elizabeth Baptist Church where he was also a member of the Joyce Roberts
Sunday school class. He loved working with Betty Ann Webber to prepare meals on
Wednesday nights before the prayer meeting. He was a member of the North
Carolina Baptist Men's Feeding Team providing hurricane relief to victims of
several storms. Mr. Champion was also a member of the Cleveland County Rose
Society. In a recent Father's Day tribute to her father, his daughter Rebecca
expressed her admiration and respect for her father who ALWAYS helped others and
who always put everyone else's needs ahead of his own. He truly had the heart of
a servant. Mr. Champion is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Rebecca
Cashatt "Becky" Champion; son, Joseph Thomas Champion and his wife, Stacy, of
Winston-Salem; daughter, Rebecca Champion Trivett and her husband, Vic, of
Greer, S.C.; brother, John Rodney Champion and his wife, Carol, of Kings
Mountain; sister, Diannah C. Ellis and her husband, Art, of Charlotte; and his
beloved grandchildren, Keegan Champion of Winston-Salem and Ally, Andrew and
Alex Trivett of Greer. The family would like to express their sincerest
heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses who treated him during his illness
and also to the doctors, nurses and staff at Hospice at Wendover for providing
the care and compassion to Jack and his family in his final days.
Funeral: Friday, June 19, 2 p.m., Elizabeth Baptist Church Visitation: The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
