Henry Alexander Ghigo Sr.

 

 

 

Henry Alexander Ghigo, Sr. died June 13, 2009 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, N.C.  He was born October 8, 1934 to Henry Francis Ghigo and Jenny Susan Ghigo in NY, NY.  They preceeded him in death, as did his Godparents who raised him, John Peter Rostan, Sr. and Irma Ghigo Rostan of Valdese, N.C., and cousins Athos Rostan, Sr. and John Peter Rostan, Jr.  He is survived by his wife, Barbara Miller Ghigo, son, Alex Ghigo of Charlotte, NC and daughter Anne Marie Ghigo of San Francisco, CA.  Also surviving him are his sister, Ada Ghigo Canal and husband Felix Canal of Indianapolis, IN; neices, Carol Canal King and husband Dan of Warsaw, IN;  Lynn Canal Kennell and husband Tom of Eureka, IL; Dr. David Canal and wife Terry of Indianapolis, IN.   Henry was educated at Riverside Military Academy, attended Davidson College and graduated from King College in Bristol, TN.  He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army.  He worked as Terminal Manager for Waldensian Bakeries in Shelby, NC for many years and after that at Eaton Corporation in Kings Mountain.  He was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church where he served as Treasurer, Elder and Trustee and the Shelby Community Lions Club serving in various capacities including President and was the recipient of the Melvin Douglas Lifetime Achievement Award.  He was a member of the fraternal organization, Le Phare des Alpes in Valdese, NC.   He loved gardening, winemaking, stamp and coin collecting and rug making as well as watching NC Tarheel basketball.  He enjoyed visiting with friends, carpentry projects and tools that went with it.  He was a good friend, good father and excellent husband.  We will miss him.   A private burial will be scheduled later at the Waldensian Church Cemetery in Valdese, NC.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19th at John Knox Presbyterian Church.  The family will receive friends at a reception at the church following the service and at other times at the home.   Memorials may be made to Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 or Life Enrichment Center Adult Day Care Service, 102 T.R.
