Larry Hicks

 

 

Larry Dale Hicks of Shelby NC passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at Hospice at Wendover of Shelby.

Born on February 5, 1941 in Cleveland County to the late John Lee Hicks and Janelle Hamrick Hicks, he grew up in the Mt. Pleasant community of Mooresboro.He graduated from Mooresboro High School in 1959; from Gardner-Webb Junior College in 1961; from Davidson College in 1963. He attended Union Theological Seminary, New York City, where he studied organ, voice, and majored in sacred music. He earned a Master’s Degree in Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a Master’s Degree in School Administration at Gardner-Webb University.

He was a dedicated math, science and reading teacher for 42 years collectively in the Baltimore City School System, Durham County School System and Shelby City School System. He was a talented church musician and singer for 45 years. Churches he served were Davidson Presbyterian Church in Davidson, NC; Rockaway Beach Congregational Church in Long Island, New York; St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Baltimore, MD; Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church and Ephesus Baptist Church in Durham, NC; and Ross Grove Baptist Church and Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, NC.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret Anne Denny Hicks of Boiling Springs, NC; daughters, Catherine Lovett Hicks of Charlotte, NC and Elizabeth Hicks Greene of Lawndale, NC; son-in-law, Mark Andrew Greene; grandchildren, Charles Andrew Greene and Susan Elizabeth Greene. He is also survived by his family of caregivers at White Oak Manor of Shelby and the Buddy Roberts Life Enrichment Center of Shelby.

His interests were his family, friends, animal rescue, the outdoors, rose-growing, theater, music and art, reading, exercise, travel, singing, and eating dessert at every opportunity.

A Memorial Service will be held on September 25, 2009, 3:00 pm at Double Springs Baptist Church in Shelby.  Gathering of friends will follow at Double Springs Baptist Church Family Life Center.

At all other times, the family will be at the home of Margaret Hicks, 121 Blakemore Dr. Shelby, N. C. 

 In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Buddy Roberts Life Enrichment Center, 103 T.R. Harris Drive, Shelby, NC 28151.
