Carroll Gene Moore

Carroll Gene Moore, 80, of Shelby, NC, died on August 17th. He retired in 1990 from Hewlett-Packard, after a 30-year career in their instruments and computer divisions. He trained and managed HP sales teams throughout the southeastern United States, and in emerging markets around the world.
Moore was born in Gaston County, NC in 1931, the son of Jack and Pauline Moore, and grew up in Gastonia. He was curious about how things work and good at fixing them, which led to an early job repairing televisions. He subsequently enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Korean War. During his enlistment, he worked with electronic navigation systems and trained pilots in the use of this new technology. Upon his return from duty, he earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree at North Carolina State University. Following his graduation, Moore worked at Western Electric in Burlington, NC, where he developed ground guidance systems for early US satellites. In 1960, he accepted a job with Bivens & Caldwell in Atlanta, GA as a sales representative for HP products. When HP acquired B&C, Bill Hewlett recruited Moore to join their growing firm.
Moore was recognized for his active role in Shelby civic efforts, including school improvements, safe neighborhoods, and local politics. His hobbies included genealogy and history research, fishing, and collector automobiles.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Withers Moore; his sister, Shirley Eaton (Wayne Eaton) of Houston, TX; his children, Beth Kirkland of Springfield, MA; Carroll Moore Jr. (Jan Newberry) of Oakland, CA; Myra Moore (David Lynn) of Athens, GA; and his grandchildren, Scott Kirkland, Henry Moore and Tommy Lynn.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm on August 20, 2011 at the Chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service.  Interment will be private.
